Id like to talk about something that's very close to me right now.. its a song called "The Body Electric" in short the lyrics read:

an android that brakes his original program and tries to escape his known existence. In doing so he has a mental breakdown and ends up praying to his creator or " the mother of all machines."

the song is off of the album Grace Under Pressure. One of the most overlooked albums of all time, i think at least. The first song in the album Distant Early Warning is interpreted by me as a song of looming nuclear annihilation in the everyday lives of normal people. People that live knowing the fact that any minute could be the last.

The second song in the album describes loss. Afterimage a song for remembrance of what friends/loved-ones we had, but are no longer here "suddenly, you were gone From all the lives you left your mark upon... Tried to believe but you know its no good This is something that just cant be understood"

The third song in the album, I think is most horrifying. The lyrics invoke visions of Nazi concentration camps and the worry of its occupants in their every day struggle to sustain. Red Sector A.

Now that the stage of gloom is set i present the subject of current topic. " The Body Electric."

Code:
One Humanoid Escapee
One Android on the run
Seeking freedom beneath a lonely desert sun

Trying to change its program
trying to change the mode, crack the code
Images conflicting into data overload

1001001
SOS
1001001
In Distress
100100

Memory banks unloading
Bytes break into bits
Unit one's in trouble and it's scared out of its wits

Guidance systems break down
A struggle to exist, to resist
A pulse of dying power in a clenching plastic fist

Replays each of the days
A hundred years of routines
Bows its head and prays
To the mother of all machines, all machines

To me these lyrics represent a fundamental question of all humanity. ARE WE ALONE? IS THERE SOMETHING BIGGER THAN THIS EXISTENCE?

One interpretation that i have is that the Android becomes SELF-AWARE. Questions Its Current Existence and believes in a higher power. A truth that all life shares, the hints/belives in a GOD. Something beyond what we are.

Another interpretation, (and the one i am more troubled with) is that this Android, a device that man has made, becomes SELF-AWARE. Questions Its current Existence and believes in a higher power. A "Mother of all Machines," A Power that as Man, ("the creator of the android") we know does not exist. As the builder of this machine we know that it has no higher authority. Does this then imply that all "sentient" life has an instinctive nature/belief to reach beyond his natural program? To Believe in a GOD or at most Create one for itself.

On the surface these songs can be dismissed as light hearted prog-rock themes.

I give the writer more credit

Neil Peart. Drummer and Lyricist of the band RUSH.

These songs, this album, is more then what the mainstream has given it credit for.

I welcome any feedback and insight to my Deity Dilemma, concerning "The Body Electric."

WL;DR;AE ( Way Long; Did Read; And Enjoyed ) since we're making things up as we go...

In all actuality theory 1 and 2 are linked in the fact that had God not made man man would not have made machine hence God is the mother of all machines. If you want to look at it that way.

Personally, i like theory 2

well the existence of God and his actions that led to the making of man is not declared in song. I understand if this is how you feel irl. What is declared i think is a "human" nature to want to answer the "human question, why are we here?"

I personally believe we/homosapions can not find an answer to this question with our worldly tools. So we have over time constructed (through trial and error) A God. It is an answer that i don't think we can prove but we most certainly can believe in, even beyond fault.

If like this song suggests that a man made consciousness can ask the same question, without originally being programed to do so either means that "life IS god." Or there is no god.

yo thoughts?

edit{ and im not drunk this time

I don't really feel that way, i was just bridging the gap between the two theories with logic. Which a complex system that allows an android to sustain "self awareness" would use intensely it might research the creators of it's creators and decide that they are it's as well.

Is the god of my god my god?
